Special Needs

Here I have compiled different types of special needs. This list and information are very general,
and by no means do they apply to everyone. This is just to give people a sense of what the world is like to people with special needs.

Autism is a complex disorder of the central nervous system that has the following 3 defining aspects:

• Difficulty with social interactions

• Impaired communication skills

• A pattern of recurring behaviour with restricted interests.

Most people with autism have problems using language, forming relationships, and appropriately
interpreting and responding to the external world around them. People with autism often have
heightened senses of the world around them. Therefore, they are often overwhelmed by smells, sights,
and sounds. They cannot process all the information, and can become frustrated because they cannot
express their feelings.

Developmental Delay

Developmental delay is manifested in different ways. A delay in fine motor skills
may be displayed by not being able to use a spoon or fork, tie his shoes etc. A delay
in gross motor skills might be displayed by not being able to ride or walk properly.

People with developmental delay are often unable to communicate clearly, and this
can be very frustrating. They can also feel self conscious, because they are not able to
do some of the things that other people their age can do.
